Setup Guide

When you first launch Recall, you'll configure your connection mode and complete the setup wizard.

First Launch

Connection Mode

Before the setup wizard, you choose how Recall operates:

  • Entirely Local — All processing on your machine, no account needed
  • Backend from Server — Connect to a shared server, requires login

If you choose server mode, you'll enter the server URL, test the connection, and either register or log in before proceeding to setup.

Login & Registration (Server Mode Only)

If using server mode:

  1. Enter the server URL provided by your administrator
  2. Register with an invite PIN, or Log In with existing credentials
  3. Setup wizard begins after successful authentication

Setup Wizard Steps

Step 1: Word Integration

Configure how Recall communicates with Microsoft Word.

On macOS:

  • Recommended Mode (Apple Events) — Simpler setup, click "Request Word Permission" to grant access
  • Advanced Mode (Word Add-in) — Uses a local HTTPS bridge with certificate

On Windows:

  • Word integration uses COM automation and is configured automatically

Step 2: Model Downloads (Optional)

Recall includes bundled AI models that work immediately. You can optionally download additional models for enhanced capabilities:

  • Llama 3.1 8B Instruct — Bundled, ready to use
  • Phi-3.5 Mini Instruct — Bundled, ready to use
  • ChatQA — Optional download for advanced query planning

Accessing Setup Later

You can return to the setup wizard at any time:

  1. Click the gear icon in the toolbar
  2. Select Setup Wizard from the popup menu

Skipping Setup

If you prefer to configure Recall manually, click Skip Setup in the wizard. You can always access individual settings through the Settings popup menu.
