Setup Overview¶
The Setup Wizard runs on first launch and walks you through the few decisions you need to make before using Recall. You can skip any step and come back later via the gear menu → Setup Wizard.
Which steps appear depends on which distribution you installed:
Full install (Recall Core on this machine)¶
- Security Certificate — trust the self-signed HTTPS certificate Recall Core generates for localhost.
- Word Integration — set up Recall's connection to Microsoft Word (automatic on Windows; permission prompt on macOS).
- Model Downloads — optional — grab any extra embedder or generator models beyond the bundled defaults.
- Create Your First Matter — name and pick a citation style for your first matter.
- Getting Started — a summary screen to close things out.
UI-Only install (connecting to a remote server)¶
- Server Connection — enter your organization's HTTPS URL and verify the connection.
- Word Integration — same as above.
- Create Your First Matter — same as above.
- Getting Started — same.
No certificate step (the UI trusts your server's public TLS cert the normal way) and no model downloads (models live on the server).
Skip vs. complete¶
- Skip setup marks the wizard complete and drops you into the main UI. Some features won't be usable (Word integration requires the macOS permission step; model downloads require picking a model) but Recall will otherwise work.
- Complete setup also marks the wizard complete — it just means you went through every step.
Either way, you can re-open the wizard from the gear menu and revisit any step.
Step-by-step detail¶
- Complete Setup Guide — every step explained, with platform-specific notes.
- Word Integration Setup — Windows COM and macOS Apple Events / Add-in flows.
- Model Downloads — what the bundled models are, what's optional, and how to add custom GGUF.
After setup¶
- Quick Start — a short tour of the UI.
- Settings — change connection mode, models, or other options later.
